SIMULATIONS AND MODELING OF TRAFFIC FLOWS

Simulations and modeling of traffic flows are key tools for analyzing and optimizing the traffic system. These approaches allow engineers and planners to predict traffic behavior, identify potential problems, and test different scenarios for planned and engineered solutions before they are implemented in the real world.

Traffic flow modeling uses mathematical models and algorithms to represent the movement of vehicles and pedestrians through a network of roads and streets. These models can be divided into three main categories: macroscopic, microscopic and mesoscopic models.

Macroscopic models study overall traffic flows on the network and provide information about changes in traffic flow such as changes in average speed, travel time, distance traveled, etc. They are useful for analysis and planning at a strategic level, such as urban plans and transport infrastructure development strategies.

Microscopic models focus on the behavior of individual traffic participants (vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists…) and their mutual interactions. They are detailed and precise, enabling the analysis of specific situations and the impact of individual factors on traffic. These models are ideal for traffic light operation optimization, intersection analysis, detailed route planning, facility access planning, changes in the level of service for users at certain points on the network or the road network as a whole. The level of detail of this type of model gives a wide range of application possibilities and adaptability to any situation.

Mesoscopic models represent an intermediate level between macroscopic and microscopic models. They combine the advantages of both approaches, allowing for a balance between detail and comprehensiveness. Mesoscopic models are useful for medium-sized simulations, such as city neighborhoods or road networks within urban areas.

The combination of modeling and simulation of traffic flows is vital for effective traffic management, reducing congestion, improving road safety and reducing negative environmental impacts. These tools enable making informed decisions and implementing optimal solutions for modern traffic challenges.

Novius Ltd has an experienced team of engineers who, by applying the most modern software solutions in this field, can respond to all client requests and analyze user behavior both at individual intersections and complex traffic networks. Some of the software in which our company provides traffic simulation and transportation modeling services includes software packages PTV VISUM, PTV VISSIM, Sidra Intersection and Synchro.
